A “strand (sand beach) beast (life form)” that uses the wind as a power source to drive along the sandy beaches of the Netherlands. The entire body is made of yellow plastic tubes, and its movements based on physical engineering are smooth and organic, reminiscent of living creatures. They were created by Dutch artist Theo Jansen (1948-) to solve the problem of rising sea levels in his homeland. Aiming to survive on the beach independently even after the author’s death, Strandbeest is equipped with functions such as walking, turning, and danger detection, and acquires systems to adapt to various environments. Living organisms, which have repeatedly lived and died, inheriting genes and genetic information and continuing to evolve, cross the existing categories of art and science and present us with new possibilities.
This exhibition will be held for the first time in Osaka, and more than 10 works will be exhibited, including the first public exhibition in Japan. In addition to being able to experience a giant Strandbeest that moves, we will clarify its structure and movement mechanism, and approach the charm of the world created by Theo Jansen.
